Basic WordPress training: Adding images to posts and pages

Posts and pages will look a little dull and perhaps slightly indigestible for the visitor if they’re not broken up with images. By the end of this tutorial you’ll be able to add images to your posts and pages.

Two ways to add images

There are two main ways to add images to your posts and pages.
They are:

    • Embedding images
    • Adding a featured image

The most common method you’ll use is embedding images.

Embedding images

In the post or page editor, the simplest way to add an image is to click inside the post editor in the position you’d like the image to appear. Next click ‘Add Media’.

You then have two options;

If the image is already in your media library (more about this later), either scroll through the library until you find it or use the search function to enter the image name. Once you have found the image, click on it.

The other option is to switch to the Upload Media tab, then drag the image file from your computer and drop it into the media uploader.

In either case, make sure the image has a title, some alternative text (to make it accessible) and a brief description. If you’d like a caption to appear underneath the image in your post or page, you can also enter this here. Next, click ‘Insert into page’.

You can then scroll down to choose the alignment of the image within the post or page (left, right or centred), where you want the image to link to (either nowhere, another page entirely or a larger version of the image which will open in a new window), and the size you’d like the image to be.

The image will now appear within the post editor.

If you change your mind about the alignment of the image, the link, or the size, you can simply click on the image within the post editor and then click on the Edit icon to make changes.

Featured Image

The featured image is the image you choose to represent the post or page. Different themes use featured images in different ways and at different sizes. Some display the featured image at the top of the post itself, most use it on the Blog stream pages (like the Blog page itself and category pages) along with the excerpt of the post.

To set the featured image for a page or post, scroll down in your post or page editor and on the right of the page you’ll see the Featured Image block.

Click ‘Set Featured Image’ and proceed by using the media uploader in exactly the same way as you did to embed an image within the post or page.

Click ‘Set Featured Image’.

Remember that the dimensions needed for optimum display of your featured image will depend upon the theme you are using.
