Textiles Reimagined ebook

Textiles Re:imagined will take you on a journey of discovery as you share in the stories of 50 diverse artists, all of whom demonstrate excellence in workmanship and design. In compiling this book for you and other passionate, creative people just like you, we sought to challenge preconceptions about what constitutes ‘textile art’. By covering such a wide and varied range of materials and techniques (including embroidery, sculpture, basketry, beading, printing, dyeing, weaving and much more), our aim is that you’ll be inspired to experiment and push the boundaries of your own practice.

And of course, as fiber art is a visual medium there’s a huge array of sumptuously vibrant images of the artists’ work to stimulate you further.

What do you have in common with these 3 textile artists?

Have you ever felt creatively stifled? Or that you're struggling to find your artistic voice? You're not alone - most successful artists have faced similar challenges.

Jennifer Collier Textile Artist

Jennifer Collier
Only after 15 years of experimentation with various methods, none of which felt “right”, did Jennifer find her unique voice. Papers are used in place of traditional textiles to create “fabrics” and then treated as if cloth, with the main skill employed being stitch. Although patently contemporary in outcome, the work is rooted firmly in traditional textile techniques.

Jan Huling Textile Art

Jan Huling
Jan has a background in commercial art, but years of meticulous planning and showing “sketch upon sketch” eventually led to a feeling of being creatively restricted. Having now discovered her true calling, which she calls “Free range beading" , Jan never feels the need to map out her designs. The outcome is always a surprise:  "Making art without a net! That’s for me!”

Barbara Cotterell Textile Artist

Barbara Cotterell
Barbara’s preference for working with found objects, mostly from around the home, has at times caused frustration. But learning to embrace the constraints of her materials led to a break-through in inspiration. A careful stewardship of resources often acts as a catalyst: “It gets me thinking about what I can do with them; manipulating materials, finding out how they behave individually, how they perform as a group, what kind of fastening works.”

Barbara Cotterell – Teacloth (2012)

The work of these 3 artists has little in common, but they’ve all overcome creative blocks and gone on to innovate in their fields, producing art that is characteristic of their own unique voices. Jennifer Collier has been the recipient of several coveted awards and her work has been featured in international publications such as VogueRed, and Selvedge. Jan Huling has exhibited widely throughout the USA and was the winner of the annual Lyons Wier Art Bazaar award. Barbara Cotterell is now a member of the renowned Material Space group and has shown her work at galleries across the UK

  •  Through a prolonged period of experimentation with ’traditional’ media, Jennifer went on to discover a distinctive style all of her own, using just one basic material – paper.
  •  Rather than being restricted by a well-worn approach, Jan discarded her sketchbook and dived straight into making. Trusting her instincts led to her signature beaded sculptures.
  • Barbara embraced the restrictions of found materials and they became integral to her work, giving it a unique voice that could only be hers.

Have you ever faced adversity in your journey as an artist? Ever been sidetracked from the one thing you’re more passionate about than anything else? You’re in great company.

Pate Conaway – Textile Artist

Pate Conaway
In his early 30s, Pate hit what he describes as “a big emotional and spiritual wall.” He came to the realisation that he had no idea who he was. Pate had convinced himself that he was unable to create art, take classes, or be part of an exhibition. To overcome these crippling feelings of inadequacy and find the dormant artist inside, Pate needed to harness his fears and start asking big questions such as “What have I told myself I cannot do?”.

Penny Burnfield Textile Artist

Penny Burnfield
A career in textile art seemed unlikely for Penny. Her family had no interest in art, and the school she attended was very academic, placing more focus on Latin and higher Mathematics. She left school believing she was totally “un-artistic” and went on to study medicine, working as a doctor until the 1980s. It was at this point that Penny began pursuing an interest in traditional embroidery, a hobby that would eventually lead her in a completely unexpected direction.

Simone de Groot Textile Artist

Simone de Groot
From around the age of six, Simone was set on being an artist; she spent her days drawing and painting and had already decided that one day she would go to Art school. When the time came for further education, her parents’ concerns about the lack of financial stability associated with the life of an artist forced Simone down a different path. She became sidetracked and took a job as an office manager. But her instinctive passion for creativity was too strong and eventually won over when she committed full-time to a career as an artist.

All three of these artists (each from very different backgrounds) faced adversity before hitting upon their path and pushing through to find success. Pate Conaway is now an established conceptual textile artist and has shown his work in various museums and galleries, schools, universities, and churches. Penny Burnfield is a member of the prestigious 62 Group of Textile Artists and uses her her formal training as a doctor to inform her work. Simone de Groot has exhibited her textile art widely throughout her native Netherlands and has also enjoyed great success as a curator.

Number 1

Pate challenged self-imposed limitations and gave himself permission to change the way he thought about the world, empowering himself to push forward creatively.

Number 2

Penny embraced exploration and new possibilities, rather than choosing the path of least resistance, freeing herself to transform a hobby into a career.

Number 3

Simone learned to trust her instincts, rather than being defined by what others thought was best for her, enabling herself to pursue her passion.

Inspirational

"An excellent book, which I read on my iPad. The layout has been designed with iPad/Kindle technology in mind, which makes the book easy to read on a device. Love the layout, the content and superb photos. Each artist speaks of her/his inspiration and the products and processes used in their work. On first reading I got as far as Polly Pollock – found her work quite inspirational & took a look at her website. There I discovered she teaches at the City Lit, London and am now enrolled on her Basketry Project course. The book is already taking me in new directions. A beautiful book, which is great to have at hand on the iPad ready to dip in to."

A visual feast

This must be the textile e-book of the year, if not the decade. The fifty artists selected represent a breathtaking variety of innovation in textile art. The accounts of the influences which shape each artist's work are fascinating and revealing, and discussion of working methods will be of interest not only to students of textile art, sculpture, mixed media and other modes of visual expression but to art lovers everywhere. The production values are very high, design of the publication superb, and the works presented are beautifully photographed.

The book has a very sumptuous feel to it, like having your own private viewing. Also it was fascinating to read the history behind each artist and where they find their inspiration. But isn’t reading the book going to waste even more time when I could be creating?

Remember, the book will be yours forever – you can dip in and out of it as and when you find yourself needing inspiration. And we’re confident it will fuel your creative process, pushing you to be bolder and expand the boundaries of what’s possible in your chosen medium. So, a small investment in time could take your work onto a new level.

I’m not sure I can afford it!

We're so confident that Textiles Re:imagined offers incredible value for money that we’re offering you a 30 day money back guarantee if you’re not inspired by the work of these incredible artists and motivated to take your own work in new directions.

Why is Textiles Re:imagined only available digitally?

If you’re a fan of printed books then no doubt you’re asking why Textiles Re:imagined is only available as an ebook. Well, there are a few reasons:

We’re a young organization, but we have high standards. We don’t yet have the funds to guarantee a beautifully printed, high spec product and we’re not prepared to compromise on quality.

The electronic format offers a few advantages over its printed counterpart such as searchability, interactive bookmarking, zoomable high resolution images, embedded links and it’s better for the environment!

The PDF format also allows you to access your book across all platforms, including desktop and laptop computers, smartphone, iPhone, tablet, iPad or e-reader. This means you can read it at home, while you’re travelling or away from your desk without lugging a bulky book with you.

We understand that some say “digital just isn’t the same as a printed book”, so for those of you who feel this way we’re offering an incentive to go digital. If you purchase the ebook, and we eventually do release the printed version (you’ll be the first to know), you’ll be able to purchase it for less than everyone else. In fact, we’ll give you the price of the ebook off the cost of the printed version. And ultimately a printed edition is really dependent on the success of the digital, so by purchasing the digital edition you’re also placing a vote towards the physical version. We guarantee that you won’t be disappointed if you do!
