Discover the creative potential of simple textile techniques and develop your personal visual vocabulary
With a respected textile artist by your side every step of the way
And she's regularly invited to share her methods for creating texture and pattern in workshops with groups like The Embroiderers’ Guild and Selvedge. Workshops that often sell out within days of going on sale.
Not bad considering that she once spent the evening hiding behind corners at her first ever exhibition!
Since rediscovering her passion for textiles after a 30-year break, Sue Stone (Chair of the renowned 62 Group of Textile Artists) has spent the past ten years building and refining how she develops texture and pattern in her art.
Art that has been exhibited all over the world (including a solo show at the UK’s biggest textile event The Knitting and Stitching Show) and featured in international publications (like Fiber Art Now and Embroidery Magazine).
But this course is not about creating a Sue Stone 'lookalike'
Exploring Texture & Pattern with Sue Stone offers you a chance to...
14 video classes spread over 4 modules
Every video class has a creative challenge. You'll be experimenting with different ways of creating texture and pattern on samples.
There’s no need for any fancy materials: just a selection of threads and some fabrics and you’re ready to go! With each new sample, you'll be pushed to become more and more inventive so that you start to build a bold visual vocabulary.
Each challenge has a goal and some guidelines. These give you a clear starting point and a focused path forward so there are no endless debates with yourself about the best course of action.
But you'll have plenty of flexibility too – what you create in response to the challenges will be entirely personal and unique.
To inspire you, Sue will share possible approaches and outcomes for each challenge. Plus there are plenty of examples from her own practice, but all the while she'll be encouraging you to originate not imitate.
The inspiration is there to give you the creative confidence to make brave choices for yourself.
When you complete a challenge, you’ll be given a series of prompts to take what you discover forward in your textile art.
And by the end of the course you’ll have a collection of at least 15 stitched samples to use as inspiration for future work.
Every video class has an accompanying printable guide that breaks down everything that’s covered in the video. These are designed to empower you to do the work.
Each video class also has a challenge checklist to keep you motivated. Tick items off the list as you go to stay on track with your experiments.
Four inspirational mini ebooks (one for each module) take the techniques and ideas you're exploring and show how they've been applied by some amazing contemporary textile artists in their work.
Suggested schedules to keep you moving forward, encouraging emails to spur you on, stitch demo videos to remind you of the basics and recommended resources to help you go deeper.
This module is all about taking Sue Stone’s favourite technique and making it your own. You’ll play with spacing, colour, tone, various combinations of threads, changes in direction and layering. And you’ll discover endless new opportunities for using running stitch to create exciting areas of texture in your work.
Four classes
You’ll experiment with backstitch to create a variety of patterns and as a drawing tool, a technique Sue uses all the time in her figurative work. You’ll also discover how a stitch Sue calls ‘mock herringbone’ can create intricate areas of pattern. And you’ll explore how couching can be used to make intriguing textural effects.
Four classes
Here you’ll be experimenting with how to build layers of interest within your textile art using two straightforward weaving techniques; strip fabric weaving and needle weaving. By combining these techniques with some of the ideas explored in modules 1 and 2, you’ll discover exciting ways to create depth and detail in your work.
Three classes
You’ll experiment with appliqué in conjunction with simple hand stitch techniques to bring a new and exciting element to your visual vocabulary. This is about taking your understanding of marrying various techniques to the next level. Sue herself has used the same experiments she’ll share with you to develop some of her best loved work.

The webinars are a chance to interact with Sue in real time, hash out ideas and follow up on anything you're finding challenging about the course. A rare opportunity to get insights from a world-renowned textile artist.
This is the talk Sue is regularly invited to share live with some of the UK's top textile art organisations. After this backstage glimpse into Sue's Texture and Pattern process, you'll be buzzing with ideas for how to take what you discover forward.
A collection of photographs taken by Sue during her travels around the UK, Europe and America offer an insight into how to look up, down and all around for inspiration in creating texture and pattern in your work.
Sue takes you step by step through how to create a stitchbook to keep all of your samples in. So whenever you need a starting point you'll have no further to look than this well-organised and beautifully presented reference.
